5 Things to Consider When Buying a Mattress Online

By Alex Quaresma
There are many reasons Canadians are turning to buying a mattress online instead of buying from a big box store, from the convenience of doorstep delivery, to saving money, to wanting to avoid pushy salespeople. But here are 5 things you must consider before you buy a mattress online.

1. Make sure there is an in-home and risk-free trial period

One of the major benefits of buying online is you can usually try the mattress out in your own home. This is even better than trying out mattresses in a showroom since you’ll have the opportunity to actually sleep on it, as opposed to merely trying it out for a few minutes. Not only is it hard to get a good feel for a mattress in a few minutes, but it’s even harder when there are salespeople lingering nearby trying to pressure you into buying. It can take about 3 weeks to get used to your new mattress. Firstly, a new mattress of any kind will have many factors that could impact comfort, including how much it holds on to heat, if it’s designed for your sleep style, and whether you can feel motion transfer from your partner. And secondly, if you are switching from a traditional spring mattress, your body may not have been getting the proper support. Foam is designed to respond to your body and alleviate pressure points, but if you’re not used to that feeling, you may need some time to adjust to the new more supportive feeling. In summary, make sure your trial period is at least 30 days long. But ideally, a trial period should be 90-100 days so you can make sure you love your new mattress.

You should also double-check what happens if you do choose to return your mattress. Luckily, most online mattress companies offer free returns. For example, if you don’t love your Endy Mattress, we’ll pick it up at no charge to you, and whenever possible, we’ll donate the used mattress to one of our charity partners

2. Determine what makes the mattress unique and if that suits your needs

With many online mattress companies popping up, it can be hard to tell the difference between all the companies and which one produces the best bed-in-a-box. Although ultimately you’ll get to sleep on the mattress and try it out for yourself, read up on what makes that particular online mattress unique and decide if that’s what you’re looking for.Icons depicting accolades that Endy has received.A FEW THINGS TO CONSIDER:
  • How firm or soft you prefer your mattress to be
  • Whether you sleep hot (traditional memory foam holds onto heat, so you may want to avoid this material)
  • How much the mattress prevents motion transfer, especially if you sleep with a partner

The Endy Mattress is made from proprietary Endy Comfort Foam. Our unique foam uses open-cell structure to provide the perfect balance of comfort and support, control sleep temperature, relieve pressure, and eliminate motion transferLearn more about open-cell foam

3. Read reviews, reviews, and more reviews

Another great way to check if the mattress is what you’re looking for is to read reviews from actual customers. Who better to hear how firm a mattress is or how quick the shipping was than from people who’ve been there, slept on that? Check that the mattress has lots of 5-star reviews, and then read some of the 1-star reviews to see if there’s a common theme and if that’s something you’re concerned about. In addition to reading the mattress company’s on-site reviews, look at off-site reviews on Google or Facebook, for example. Take a peek at their social media comments as well. Customers sometimes take to social media to reach a company publicly, so you’ll see how the company responds to comments and you’ll get a good idea of how responsive their customer service team is.

4. Investigate their safety certifications

When it comes to something that you bring into your home, you want to be sure it’s safe for you and your family. Third-party certifications ensure that the product is regularly vetted by an outside source. Some certifications to look out for when it comes to mattress foam, look for foam that is CertiPUR-US® Certified, so you know it’s safe from VOCs, formaldehyde, and phthalates.

5. Check where the mattress is manufactured

Many companies import their products to cut down on costs, however, this means that any shipping delays or duties associated with their products are passed on to you, the consumer. When the mattress is made in Canada and shipped within Canada, it means you will get your order faster, it’s a more sustainable choice, and you’re helping support the Canadian economy.Ultimately, your decision will likely come down to value and comfort, but we hope these tips help inform your decision on how to choose the best online mattress.
